WHY I PRODUCED THESE VIDEOS
The treatment of choice for ADHD is a combination of medication
and counseling.
One of the purposes of the counseling is to educate children and families about
ADHD and treatment options. I produced this curriculum to help me accomplish this
goal in a stimulating and entertaining fashion.
The lessons also educate parents about Oppositional Defiant
Disorder (ODD) since
60% of children with ADHD are also diagnosed with ODD.
A second purpose of counseling is to help children overcome any self esteem problems
which have developed in response to the ADHD. The lessons therefore also address
self esteem issues.
A third purpose of counseling is to help the family develop a more
ADHD friendly
home environment. This too is introduced.
A fourth purpose of counseling is to help the parents devise an
effective home incentive
program. One of the lessons deals with this issue.
A fifth purpose of counseling is to address school related
problems. Some suggestions
are made regarding both school and homework.
One of the goals of the activity guide is to encourage the family to communicate and have
fun together. This is frequently a sixth purpose of counseling.
As a child psychologist I felt a need for this curriculum. I
now use the lessons on a regular
basis to improve the quality of me therapy sessions.
The lessons are not designed to be used as a replacement for
counseling but rather to be used
as a part of or in addition to a counseling program.
